Claudia Werner grew up and graduated from school
in a small town close to Frankfurt Germany. She completed an apprenticeship
as a nurse there only to decide that she would rather work in the
travel industry. She went to school again and got a business degree
specializing in travel management, sales and marketing. During her
semester breaks, she would work as a tour guide for a language school
catering to German teenagers in England. After finishing school
with honors she began work in the marketing department of the same
language school where she had been a tour guide.
In 1996 Claudia traveled North on a backpacking
trip through Western Canada and Alaska. She immediately knew that
she would love to live in this amazing state known as the "Last
Frontier".
In 1998 Claudia made her dream come true and moved
to Alaska. After working as a dog handler north of Nenana for one
winter, she moved to Anchorage to work for a wholesale travel business.
She learned a lot more about Alaska and it's vendors and soon specialized
in planning, quoting and selling vacations to Alaska and the Yukon
Territories for tour operators worldwide.
Another very important achievement in Claudia’s
career in Alaska was being voted onto the board of directors of
the Iditasport – a human powered race (bicycle, ski or foot)
across the "1049 Mile" long Iditarod Trail, in the cold
month of February.
In 2002, Claudia and two other athletes started
"Alaska Ultra Sport" which hosts the Iditarod Trail Invitational
Race. Alaska’s wilderness is Claudia’s greatest passion.
Through donations and volunteer work for several environmental organizations,
Claudia continually helps to protect this vast and wonderful state.
Claudia spends a lot of time outdoors practicing
all kinds of activities. Hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, rafting,
sea-kayaking, canoeing, skiing and dog mushing are some of her favorites.
Claudia also spends a few weeks the year in remote checkpoints while
volunteering for the great Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race and other
various wilderness events.
By combining her business skills, knowledge of Alaska
and her great passion and pride for Alaska’s beautiful outdoors,
Claudia has created the innovative business: Greatland
Adventures.
